It can maintain the car's temperature before it reaches the normal operating temperature. The engine coolant only circulates in the upper part of the radiator, in a so-called small circuit. This allows the engine to heat up quickly from a cold state. This is very fuel-intensive and causes the most damage to the car, leading to a series of carbon buildup problems. Once the normal operating temperature is exceeded, it can open, allowing the coolant to circulate throughout the entire radiator for rapid heat dissipation.
